Detox Your Thoughts by Andrea Bonior, Ph.D.

As humans, we’re all susceptible to a whole host of mental traps that make us feel anxious, depressed, insecure, and all-around bad. Bonior (whose name you might recognize from SELF articles because I can rarely resist using her valuable insight in our mental health stories) helps readers navigate negative thoughts, build self-compassion, and learn other necessary skills drawn from mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT, a form of CBT that focuses on accepting even difficult thoughts and feelings).

Essential Art Therapy Exercises by Leah Guzman

I never considered art therapy for myself until my psychiatrist suggested painting as a potential self-care activity for managing anxiety related to ADHD. I assumed it was too intimidating, the barrier to entry too high. But it turns out that art therapy is a varied modality, full of exercises accessible to people of all skill levels and backgrounds. So on top of buying myself a paint-by-numbers kit, I also ordered this book. Many of Guzman’s exercises don’t require traditional art supplies at all. Some can be done on the computer with the help of PowerPoint, Pinterest, and more. I haven’t even made a dent in the book, but I love flipping to a random page when I need it and diving in.
